Semaglutide is a sustainable way to manage weight by reducing the feeling of hunger and cravings. This FDA-approved medication has been shown to help people lose a significant amount of weight and keep it off much longer than any other weight loss solution on the market.
Semaglutide is a once-weekly subcutaneous injection GLP-1 agonist for weight loss. GLP-1 agonists were initially developed to improve glycemic control with type 2 diabetics along with diet and exercise. It works to enhance the growth of beta cells in the pancreas, which are sites of insulin production. Semaglutide will delay gastric emptying by reducing glucagon secretion in a glucose-dependent manner. The delay in gastric emptying can reduce appetite, make you feel full, improve control of eating, and reduce food cravings.
Normal side effects with semaglutide are nausea/heartburn, or anything gastrointestinal related. Most often nausea is reported 2-3 days after injection. Due to the concern for Semaglutide side effects, we start LOW and slowly increase the dose. The Semaglutide will be given to you in a four-week dose, with an increase of dosing every month. The higher the dose of medication, the more effective the medication is at helping you to lose weight.
We want you to succeed and sustain your weight loss, so here we recommend using an app or log to help track your daily intake, such as My Fitness Pal. My Fitness Pal is free and very user friendly. The app has restaurants and food already programmed, so it’s easy to track your meals. Your initial consultation will include a suggested daily calorie intake based on your BMI and the amount of weight you aim to lose.
Let’s get you started! First, we are going to need some bloodwork to ensure you are a good candidate for the program. Once we receive your blood work, we will schedule you to come in for a consultation. We will document your weight and take body measurements to help track your progress. Once a month we will see you to touch base, weigh in and get your next months’ worth of injections.
Suggested dosing of Semaglutide: (may be modified based on side effects and BMI)
Your Semaglutide dose for weight loss will be given to you to take home and inject, your syringes will be prefilled for you. We will walk you through injecting at your first visit. Please keep the syringes refrigerated. Dispose of your needles in a sharp container, these can be purchased online or through your pharmacy. This medication is specifically for you – please do not share with others.
